Tahlia Undarlegt: Sacred Ground

17 April – 17 May 2025

In Sacred Ground, Tahlia Undarlegt presents a series of ceramic sculptures that evoke the profound connections embedded within certain places and objects. Drawing thoughtfully upon both her European and Wongatha heritage, Undarlegt creates totemic figures and vessels, which operate as contemporary effigies, quietly radiating an inherent authority reminiscent of ancient ceremonial objects. Undarlegt’s creative approach intentionally refrains from overly planned outcomes, emphasizing intuitive expression and responsiveness to the medium. This openness allows the intrinsic qualities of clay to emerge naturally, enhancing the artworks’ earthy, grounding presence.

Undarlegt’s sculptures are distinctively unglazed, deliberately highlighting the natural textures, colours, and properties of the clay itself. The organic banded patterns, prominent throughout several pieces, result from skillfully combining different clay bodies through traditional coiling techniques. The inherent hues and textures emerge directly from the materials, not from applied pigments or artificial coloration, underscoring an honest dialogue between artist, medium, and environment.

Her environmentally conscious methodology further extends to the use of non-toxic materials and processes, prioritising the least possible ecological impact. By employing mid-fire ceramics, Undarlegt significantly reduces energy consumption typically associated with higher-temperature firings. This conscious decision aligns with a holistic philosophy that values every stage of artistic production as equally significant, echoing broader principles found in contemplative traditions which advocate awareness and intentionality throughout the creative process.

Central to this body of work is the recurrent use of chains, symbolizing intricate narratives around ancestral ties, cultural identity, and historical burdens. Rather than indicating restraint, Undarlegt’s figures bear their chains as adornments, embodying strength and resilience in carrying past experiences forward. The chains, crafted from the same clay material as the figures themselves, highlight a powerful symbolic unity, suggesting an acceptance and integration of personal and collective histories.

Sacred Ground exemplifies Undarlegt’s commitment to fostering reflective and contemplative spaces. Her sculptures invite viewers to pause and reconsider their relationships to memory, identity, and environment, embracing the inherent sacredness of both personal narrative and the natural world that shapes it.
